Brief Narrative Summary of Ultimate EV Range Race, Till the Battery DIED, Tesla Model Y vs Mercedes EQA vs Nissan Ariya vs Audi Q4 Sportback vs Genesis GVC60 vs VW ID Buzz YouTube Video

Mat Watson and his team embarked on an expedition to test the range of six of the latest all-electric SUVs: the Volkswagen ID Buzz, Mercedes EQA, Nissan Ariya, Audi Q4 Sportback, Genesis GVC 60, and Tesla Model Y. Their journey took them from Oxford to Newcastle on England’s M1 Motorway, adhering to speed limits  and to keep things consistent by setting climate control to 20 degrees and not using heated seats. Also be putting the cars in their normal driving mode. Along the way, they switched vehicles at various service stations, aiming to examine the cars’ performance and the accuracy of their manufacturers’ claimed ranges.

Vehicle Details:

  • Volkswagen ID Buzz: Mat Watson praised its design, high driving position, and ample interior space. Criticisms include the fiddly infotainment system and poor quality of some interior plastics.
  • Mercedes EQA: The car felt nippier than the Volkswagen ID Buzz and boasted a superior quality interior. The infotainment system was better than that of the Volkswagen, although Android Auto display was smaller. Some bumps were noticeable, but it was quieter than the Volkswagen. The boot space was the smallest among the cars tested.
  • Nissan Ariya: Mat admired the car’s design, dash with wood trim, curved screens, and wide screen Android Auto. It was slightly noisier and bumpier than the Mercedes EQA, and headroom was somewhat limited.
  • Audi Q4 Sportback: The vehicle offered similar acceleration to the Nissan Ariya but was quieter and featured a suspension similar to the Mercedes.
  • Genesis GVC 60: The car felt responsive and slightly quicker. It also featured a good infotainment system, digital driver’s display, and separate climate controls.
  • Tesla Model Y: This model provided Auto steer and navigate on autopilot features. It felt quick but wasn’t the quietest. The suspension was firm, and steering felt sporty. Most functions could be controlled via voice commands.

The conclusion of the challenge revealed varying performances across the vehicles. The Volkswagen ID Buzz had the shortest distance, and the Tesla Model Y Long Range went the furthest. The Nissan Ariya stood out for achieving the highest percentage of its claimed range.
